Which Kinds of Stainless Steel Are Suitable for CNC Machining?

The ideal stainless steel for CNC machining will vary depending on the particular application and part specifications. An austenitic stainless steel would be an excellent choice, for instance, if the component needs to have good corrosion resistance. The use of martensitic or duplex stainless steel would be preferable if the component required great strength. The following kinds of stainless steel are suitable for CNC machining:

Ferritic stainless steels: Ferritic stainless steels have high corrosion resistance and are magnetic. Compared to austenitic stainless steels, they are more expensive to process but cost less overall. Ferritic stainless steels suitable for CNC machining include those with the designations 430 and 446.

Martensitic stainless steels: The properties of martensitic stainless steels include magnetism, high strength, and hardness. Although they are more difficult to deal with than austenitic stainless steels, they can nevertheless be hardened through heat treatment. Examples of stainless steels that can be used for CNC machining include the martensitic stainless steels 410, 416, and 420.

Austenitic stainless steels: The most prevalent form of stainless steel is austenitic, and it is also the most machinable. They have a high level of corrosion resistance and are non-magnetic. 303, 304, and 316 stainless steel are a few examples of austenitic stainless steels that are appropriate for CNC machining.

Duplex stainless steels: Duplex stainless steels are created by combining austenitic and ferritic stainless steels. Despite having the highest strength and corrosion resistance of any type of stainless steel, they are the hardest to mill. Some duplex stainless steels that can be CNC machined include 2205 and 2507 duplex stainless steel.

It should be noted that some types of stainless steel are more difficult to make than others. Duplex stainless steel, for example, is the most difficult type of stainless steel to produce. They differ from other types of stainless steel in that they are tougher and have a higher tensile strength. If you are unsure of what type of stainless steel to choose for your project, it is crucial that you consult a CNC machining facility. They will be able to help you choose the ideal type of stainless steel for your particular needs.
