Arguably the safest genre to put money into is racing games. Fast-paced and entertaining for the whole family, games like kart racers are a terrific place for kids to start their digital gaming careers. Would that we were young again.

Eggy Car

Among all Pixar properties, Eggy Car Cars seemed like the most natural fit for a full-fledged video game adaptation. After the disappointing sequel, Cars 3, with its surprising above-average tie-in, Driven to Win, helped get the franchise back on track.

The game may not have the depth or endless fun of, say, Mario Kart, but it's a fun distraction for the legions of young fans of Lightning McQueen and his penchant for speed. Most of the franchise's original voice actors don't make an appearance in the game, but a whopping 23 characters have been lifted straight from the movies and put into Eggy Car.

Lego Kart Racing

The custom racer hasn't lost any of its lustre in the nearly two decades since its PC debut in 1999, even though most of the kids who grew up playing it are waiting for knee replacements and need two attempts to get out of a particularly low armchair.

High Voltage's wacky racer is a wild, colourful adventure through all the best karting cliches (beach, space, castle, Ancient Egypt), making it one of the best racing games for kids ever made. It also features a wide variety of bizarre minibosses for the players to take on one by one, such as the vampire Basil the Bat Lord, the villainous pirate Captain Redbeard, and the zany islander in a mask titled King Kahuka. What a great way to spice up the action!

If you played Lego Racers as a youngster and now have kids of your own, you have a responsibility to share this piece of gaming history with them. They probably didn't care about grandpa's old Omega watch.

League of Launchers

We've already had the discussion on this site about whether or not Rocket League is a racing game, and we've concluded that it is, and that it's a great one at that. Rocket League is one of the few games aimed at a wide demographic of young people that deserves the acclaim it has received since its introduction in 2015 on PlayStation 4 and PC, where it has maintained a strong fanbase of dedicated supporters.

Rocket League combines karting with a futuristic reimagining of football in a way that is fast-paced, frantic, and often immensely thrilling.

Prize Race for the Paw Patrol Gang

While the quality of the numerous licenced kart racing tie-in games may vary, Paw Patrol Grand Prix is undeniably a good alternative for parents of very young children who wish their children to have a less hazardous gaming experience. Because of how friendly and approachable it is to a much younger audience, Grand Prix is one of the best racing video games for kids.

It's also given us a great excuse to start making dog-related Formula One jokes. We were only able to snag Sebastian Vettel and Bark Webber.

Steamroller: Unleashed

It looked like bad luck for Hot Wheels Unleashed to put up posters. Some may have questioned the motives behind the creation of a digital tie-in for a popular line of toys that are obviously not digital but come to life when children use their imaginations.

Thankfully, these worries were (mostly) unjustified. Players steer Hot Wheels vehicles in races against others on miniature tracks in various aesthetically pleasing domestic settings. It does an excellent job of capturing the awe one feels when something ordinary takes on new significance when viewed from an unusual angle. It's like a Toy Story scene spliced with a racing simulator.Whether or not your child is familiar with the original toys, Hot Wheels Unleashed is one of the best racing games available for them since it is highly fun, inventive, and flexible.
