What to do when using a brand new router

There are many good reasons to upgrade a router. You will gain many potential benefits: faster speed, improved scope, and new features. It will also ensure maximum compatibility with the latest devices. Here are the things you need to do when changing the router.

Modify SSID and password

To access the router's management settings, enter the router's address in a web browser. This is usually an IP address, such as 192.168.0.1

Alternatively, for Netgear, use a more traditional URL, such as routerlogin.com

Not sure what your router is? You can find it in the manual.

When prompted, enter the administrator username and password, which can also be found in the manual. If you don't have a user manual, you can find it online.

Each model of router uses the same default login details. If you know which brand of router your neighbor is using, then there is nothing to stop you from searching for passwords online and logging in.

So you should frequently change the router password. If your router allows it, you should also change your username and SSID. You can usually find the SSID in the password in the wireless section and maintenance or management section of the management page.

Please note that changing the administrator password of the router will not affect the password you use when connecting to the internet. It is only a password used to access the router settings page.

Update firmware

It is always a good idea to check for available firmware updates for any new hardware, and routers are no exception. Router firmware updates may not give you any exciting new features, but you may receive performance and connectivity improvements, and you will definitely receive security patches.

Vulnerabilities are always discovered in routers, so for this reason alone, you should always ensure that your router remains up-to-date.

This should happen automatically in the future, but since it is not uncommon for products to use old firmware, it is best to immediately force a manual update when you receive a brand new router. You can find this option in the maintenance, management, or other similar tags section of the router settings, which may require downloading a file to your computer. Simply follow the instructions for a specific router model.
