Infrastructure development in Bahria Town Karachi 2

There are various infrastructure development projects under way in Bahria Town Karachi, which will improve the quality of life for its residents. Among these are the construction of a new airport, a metro system, and a seaport. The airport project is expected to be completed by 2020. The metro system will connect Bahria Town with other parts of Karachi, and the seaport will provide jobs for residents.

The progress made so far

Since the inception of the Karachi metropolitan area in 1988, its infrastructure development has been slow and inadequate. The status of Karachi’s roads, bridges, airports and hospitals has been a matter of serious concern for many years.

Most infrastructure projects in Karachi have been undertaken piecemeal and with little coordination between various departments. There is no dedicated authority responsible for coordinating and overseeing these projects. This has resulted in delays and cost overruns.

To address this issue, the government of Sindh announced a plan to develop Karachi into a global city in April 2014. The plan envisages creating a new financial district, redeveloping existing areas such as Korangi and Malir Town, constructing new schools and hospitals, developing transport links and setting up industrial estates.

The Karachi Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), under the jurisdiction of the provincial government, has been charged with implementing the plan. So far, it has completed more than 50 projects worth over Rs500 billion ($7.5 billion). These include:

- Construction of a new financial district on the outskirts of Karachi called Miani Goth
- Construction of an airport at Ghotki
- Development of five new suburbs: Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Mehar East, Landhi Town Phase II, Manora Bandar and Thatta Town
- Construction of six new schools: Lady Reading School in Korangi Town, Government Boys School in Malir Town Phase I, Christ Church Anglo
