The benefits of SMILE eye surgery

SMILE stands for Small incision Lenticule Extraction. SMILE is a kind of refractive surgery that is performed to correct refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), Presbyopia (age related nearsightedness) and astigmatism (blurred vision in all directions) by reshaping the cornea because the refraction relies on the cornea and the lens of the eye. Refractive error makes our vision blurred and hazy. This also leads to difficulty in reading, driving, eye strain and headache. During smile surgery, femtosecond laser is used to make a small lens-shaped bit of tissue (lenticule) within the cornea. Then a small arc shaped incision is made in the surface of the cornea using laser and then the lenticule is extracted. After that, the curvature of the cornea is reshaped to get the desired refraction in the eye.
