Cataract Surgery | Bharti Eye Foundation

Cataract Surgery is a cataract removal operation in which the cataract is treated by implanting a new intraocular lens in the eye. Cataract is an eye disorder which leads to clouding on the lens of the eye due to collecting proteins on the lens. The person with cataract has difficulty see the things clearly and he faces difficulty in reading, driving and even identifying the person standing before him. In cataract, the person has also difficulty in night vision and the dark colours look dull to him.

During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens of the eye is broken into tiny pieces and then these tiny pieces are suctioned out and then a new artificial lens is implanted in place of the cloudy lens. There are mainly three types of cataract surgeries.

The types of cataract surgery:-

  • Phacoemulsification: - Phacoemulsification is performed using a special device named phaco machine. In this surgery the cloudy lens is broken into the tiny pieces using ultrasonic waves and then these fragments are suctioned out with the help of the laser. At last, a new intraocular lens is inserted in place of the cloudy lens.
  • Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS):- In this surgery, the cataract is removed using femtosecond laser and a new artificial lens is implanted.
  • Extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE):- Your ophthalmologist  might recommend extracapsular surgery  if the ultrasound is unable or unlikely to break down the cataracts
