Laser cataract surgery is performed to remove cataract from the eye. Cataract is actually an eye condition when the lens of the eye gets cloudy. The lens of the eye gets cloudy when the fibres and proteins starts break down. As a result, the person with cataract has to face blurred vision. In laser cataract surgery, an ophthalmologist uses laser to break the cloudy lens into tiny pieces and then these pieces are taken out from the eye and a new artificial lens is inserted in the eye.

How laser cataract surgery is is done?

  • First of all, the ophthalmologist diagnoses and examines the cataract and observes the progression of the cataract. After that, he/she recommends you laser cataract surgery if required at this stage.
  • Proceeding to the surgery, you are given local anesthesia to be relaxed and eye drops to numb your eye so that you can’t feel any discomfort in your eye during the surgery.
  • During laser cataract surgery, the laser is used to create a small incision on the surface fo the eye and then a small probe with ultrasonic energy is inserted to break the cloudy lens into fragments. Thereafter,   the probe is removed and the other probe is inserted to suction out the lens.
  • And finally a new intraocular lens is implanted in place of natural cloudy lens. This procedure is painless and safe.
