Can a woman perform Umrah alone?

This is a common question asked by women who plan to perform Umrah and Hajj. Simply put, women should be accompanied by their Mahram or husband to perform Umrah, so a woman should perform Umrah with others. So you may be wondering:

Who is my Mahram?

A mahram is a male relative forbidden to marry a woman due to kinship, breastfeeding or marriage. A woman's husband will not be of the mahram category as she may marry him, so she must be accompanied by a mahram or her husband. In fact, the importance of a mahram was affirmed by the Prophet ﷺ in a hadith narrated by Ibn 'Abbas (RA):

 ((لَا يَخْلُوَنَّ رَجُلٌ بِاِمْرَأَةٍ إِلَّا وَمَعَهَا ذُو مَحْرَمٍ, وَلَا تُسَافِرُ اَلْمَرْأَةُ إِلَّا مَعَ ذِي مَحْرَمٍ))

A man should never be alone with a woman unless there is a Mahram. A woman also cannot travel with anyone except Mahram.

In the same hadith, a man asked the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him

O Messenger of Allah! My wife goes to Hajj while I enlist for such a battle, what should I do?

Praying for his peace, the Prophet asked him to join his wife in the Hajj.

Recently, Saudi Arabia has allowed women aged 45 and over to perform Hajj without a mahram as long as they travel with an organized group and submit a NOC (Certificate of No Objection) from their Mahram. Surname.

A woman should always seek the advice of a scholar about her personal situation.

Umrah dress code for women

Both males and females must enter the ihram state for Umrah; However, when men are required to wear ihram (two-piece, izar and Rida) clothing, there is no such requirement for women in ihram. The dress code for women should be simple and modest and not reveal her 'awrah'. Like men, women should not wear perfume or perfume, but for women, this also applies to Umrah jewellery and makeup.

It is also reported that 'Abdullah ibn' Umar reported from the Prophet ﷺ:

 ((وَلاَ تَنْتَقِبِ الْمَرْأَةُ الْمُحْرِمَةُ وَلاَ تَلْبَسِ الْقُفَّازَيْنِ)

"...Muhrima (a woman from ihram state) must not cover her face or wear gloves." [2]

Can a woman perform Umrah during her period?

For many Muslims, Umrah can be a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage that they may not get the chance to do again. For women, menstruation plays an important role in Umrah planning. Allah specifically enacted menstruation for the daughters of Adam, which influenced some of their acts of worship. Umrah is no exception. As such, women cannot perform Umrah during their period until they become chaste.

You should plan your Umrah in advance to avoid these days of the month; however, if you are challenged with this within the time you have reserved, seek solace in knowing that 'A'isha Radhi Allahu anha, Mother of the Believers, has been tested in this way.

When 'A'isha accompanies Prophet ﷺ to perform Hajj, she gets her period. The Prophet, peace be upon him, found our mother crying and asked her:

 ((“‏ مَا لَكِ أَنُفِسْتِ ‏”)

What is your problem? Are you menstruating? [3]

When she answered yes, he informed her:

 ("”‏ إِنَّ هَذَا أَمْرٌ كَتَبَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى بَنَاتِ آدَمَ، فَاقْضِي مَا يَقْضِي الْحَاجُّ، غَيْرَ أَنْ لاَ تَطُوفِي بِالْبَيْتِ ‏”")

That is what Allah ordained the daughters of Adam. So do what all pilgrims do except Tawaf around Ka'ba.

Plan your Umrah accordingly, but put your trust in Allah.

May Allah accept your Umrah!
