The eyes are one of the most sensitive organs in our body and the contact lens material being used for contact lenses matters a lot in the long-term eye health of the user. Contact lens material commonly in use:

There are four main types of contact lens material in use today:

  1. Hydrogel: This contact lens material is soft and flexible, allowing oxygen to pass through it. It is the most commonly used material for daily wear contact lenses.
  2. Silicone Hydrogel: This contact lens material is even softer and more flexible than hydrogel and provides even better oxygen transmission. This contact lens material is often used for extended-wear contacts and is quickly becoming the material of choice for many contact lens wearers.
  3. Gas Permeable (GP): This contact lens material is more rigid than hydrogel and silicone hydrogel, but it is still somewhat flexible. GP lenses are often used for people with astigmatism or who need higher amounts of correction.
  4. Soft Toric: This contact lens material is specially designed for people with astigmatism. It is a combination of soft contact lens material and a GP lens material and is designed to provide more comfort than a GP lens.

Here is some more contact lens material being used:

Glass contact lenses are lenses made of glass that can be worn to correct vision. Glass contact lenses are rarely used today because they are heavier than plastic contact lenses and can be uncomfortable to wear. They are also more prone to breaking and require more frequent cleaning and storage than plastic contact lenses.

Whereas, plastic contact lenses are well-known for their comfort and convenience. They are made from a soft, flexible material that conforms to the shape of the eye. Unlike glass contact lenses, plastic contact lenses are very lightweight and allow for greater oxygen transmission, which reduces the risk of infection. They also require less frequent cleaning and storage than glass lenses, making them more convenient and cost-effective.
