What is Substitute Addiction?

A condition known as substitute addiction occurs when someone switches from one addictive behaviour or substance to another. This might happen when someone is getting over a major addiction, like using drugs or alcohol, and starts acting in ways that give them the same kinds of feelings or experiences. A recovering alcoholic, for instance, can start to compulsively exercise or gamble instead. When a person is unable to access their primary addiction, substitute addiction can also happen as they turn to another substance or habit to make up for it. Those in recovery need to be aware of the possibility of substitution addiction and get help if they observe this trend in themselves.
