The Rise and Fall of Fiber Optic Lights

In the early 2000s, fiber optic lights were incredibly popular because they offered a unique way to change colors in your pool. Before the introduction of these lights, the only option was manually attaching colored plastic lenses to the outside of a standard white pool light fixture. Fiber optic towers revolutionized the swimming pool industry by providing an easy and efficient way to achieve vibrant colors. The towers consisted of a light bulb and a rotating glass wheel with multiple colors. By flipping switches, you could turn the bulb on/off and rotate the color wheel to choose your desired color. Alternatively, you could let it rotate and enjoy a mesmerizing display of continuously changing colors.

However, the downfall of these devices became evident over time. They were highly vulnerable to dust accumulation and rodent infestations. As dust settled on the bulb, the light dimmed, and as the color wheel got dirty, the colors faded. These towers attracted rodents seeking warmth and shelter, and they would create nests inside the towers, filling them with all sorts of debris like leaves, grass, insulation, and foam. This not only affected the effectiveness of the light but also posed a risk when rats chewed on the wires. It's not uncommon to come across some charred critters inside these towers.

Embrace Modern Options

Thankfully, in 2022, we now have a wide array of color-changing lights for pools, ranging from full-sized fixtures to small low-voltage lights. The most exciting development in recent years has been the creation of products designed to retrofit old fiber optic lights and towers. Upgrading your system with these new options offers vibrant colors and proven reliability. Since 2015, these products have shown outstanding performance. Not only do you get a broader range of colors, but you can also enjoy captivating "color shows." One of my personal favorites is the American color show, where the colors cycle from red to white to blue and back, creating a captivating and patriotic ambiance. Imagine experiencing this breathtaking display during a nighttime pool party!
