These kinds of scams are dangerous for a few reasons, but can also be easily avoided if you know how to spot them. Here’s a quick primer on how they work and what you can do to ensure you never fall victim to such an attack.

How Text Message Scams Work

While there are a few specific types of text message scam out there, the general idea behind all of them is to get you to click on a malicious link. This link may masquerade as something harmless, such as an update to your favorite app, or a notification from a service you use regularly. This website will then prompt you to enter sensitive personal information, such as your login credentials or credit card number. Of course, once you enter this information, it goes straight into the hands of the scammer, who can then use it to commit identity theft or other crimes. Don’t Respond, Report

There’s a tendency from some who receive these texts to respond with some kind of “STOP” or other message, but this is actually a bad idea.
